I am Sarah, a professional interior designer, stylist and creative director of Sarah Mailer Design. I work in and around London on luxury residential projects, creating classic yet contemporary spaces for my clients. I am also a freelance writer and artist.

GIRL ABOUT HOUSE, my long-overdue blog (and arguably my ‘third baby’), was launched in June 2017. The perfect outlet to explore all that inspires me and share design advice, it artfully combines my love of writing, art and design.

Colour Trend: Camel. Hands up if you own a camel coat?! I've certainly invested (albeit in the knitwear and bags too) and I am absolutely enamored by the versatility of this shade. It's undeniable; camel is the fashionista's colour of choice right now. And where fashion leads, interiors tend to follow. In this case, I can see the beginnings of a serious cult following. An offshoot of our '70s craze but too important not to have its own named category, camel is big business. Flattering, expensive and beautiful with its trusted side-kicks of cream, navy and black and moving to red and soft, blush pinks and green.Image source: Girl About House Instagram

I am unashamedly obsessed with beautiful things and strive to enjoy ‘the finer things in life’ (budget permitting)! I spend my free time ‘about town’, frequenting gorgeous hotels, stylish eateries, bars and galleries. I also have a penchant for period properties. I am also a shopping-mad, fashion-fiend.

With my background as a fine-artist, drawing design inspiration often occurs unconsciously. And, interestingly, whilst I love a polished space, sources of inspiration are not necessarily always so chic;

It could be the bark of a tree or the knee of a ripped jean that triggers a need to inject texture into a space.

The impossibly beautiful Yves Saint Laurent, Majorelle Gardens in Marrakech made me want to rush home, paint my walls Yves Klein Blue and adorn the place with house plants!

Wherever it sparks from, glamorous or otherwise, inspiration is key.

Craft is back! Consider this period as the start of a huge Art-Nouveau (esque) revival - a celebration of all things handmade, homespun and unique - a celebration of the individual piece. This already rings true if you consider the coverage that woven bags have been receiving or our unbridled enthusiasm for hand-crafted wooden furniture. Perhaps it's a coincidence, but this makes Mykonos the an extremely on-trend island! The use of natural materials was rife - from hewn oak to rough limestone walls, vast stone floors, pinch pot ceramics and linen upholstery. This is not the place for shiny gloss finishes and gaudy, over-manufactured pieces.

Interior Designer London - Sarah leads a successful luxury interior design studio, creating beautifully stylish spaces. Based in Hertfordshire, the majority of projects are focused in and around London.

Clothes and accessories feature heavily in my life – they always have – and I explore the latest trends, luxury brands and key pieces each season. I approach formulating an outfit much like designing an interior; I begin with a look in mind, building on a classic base with trend-led accents, strategic layering and impeccable styling. I explore fashion and interiors closely, recognising and highlighting their close relationship.

This combo is undoubtedly one of my absolute favourites.  Ever-chic, the marriage of blue and white - celebrated in the Greek flag - is always a happy one. This can be done in so many ways but this year, it's all about mixing materials, textures and finishes both in dressing yourself and your space. Mykonos style rejoiced!

GIRL ABOUT HOUSE explores and celebrates luxury London life. I am fortunate to be immersed in the design world and share my experiences at industry events and parties, product launches, design festivals and showcases. Glamorous locations – from hotels to eateries, showrooms to galleries – and my travel experiences are also featured on the blog. I extend this content via Instagram and Pinterest, through my posts and stories.
